How to calculate number of bricks in one cubic meter- Practical Numerical

If you could calculate number of bricks in one cubic meter then you can calculate number of bricks in 50 cubic meters. Bricks are the basic and important materials of construction. About 75% of the structures are covered with bricks.

This is mostly used as construction in Asian countries. While you began to estimate the structure like a building, it becomes a challenge for you to calculate overall required bricks and volume of mortar.

In a mortar, you also have to calculate the volume of sand and cement as the mortar is the mixture of sand and cement.

So, it is very important for you to learn to calculate a number of bricks required and volume of mortar required per unit volume of work.

For this calculation, you should have the basic knowledge to calculate volume, the grade of mortar you will use for construction like M5, M4, M10, M20 etc, and somewhat creative mind.

Don’t worry this is simple to calculate just read carefully.

Generally, cement, the sand ratio for mortar is used as (1:6) for 9” brickwork and (1:4). for 41/2” brickwork.

Mortar thickness should be less than 10 mm between the courses as well as sides of the bricks. Ensure using good quality of cement and sand for better bonding between bricks.

Now, let us start how to calculate our required number of bricks and volume of mortar.

How to calculate number of bricks in one cubic meter

Let us take the size of the modular bricks to be (190 X 90 X 90) mm and thickness of mortar (10) mm as shown in the calculation above. Suppose you have to calculate the bricks and mortar required for a wall having volume one meter cube (1 m3).

Stepwise calculation of a number of bricks and volume of mortar required for one cubic meter wall.

Solution for How to calculate number of bricks in one cubic meter

Step1:- Calculate the volume of one brick with mortar.

Length, breadth, and height of the bricks we took above are (190X90X90) respectively. But after adding 10 mm mortar thickness at all side of brick we get (200X100X100) dimension respectively.

So, The volume of one brick with mortar will be

=(200X100X100) mm cube.

=0.002m3

Therefore, Number of bricks required for 1 cubic metre will be = (1/0.002) = 500 No.s

Step2:- Calculate the volume of bricks without mortar.

As above dimension,

The volume of one brick without mortar will be

= (190X90X90) mm cube.

=0.001539 (m3 )

Step3:- Calculate the volume of 500 bricks without mortar.

=500 X 0.001539 meter cube.

=0.7695 meter cube.

Step4:- Calculate the amount of mortar required by subtracting the volume of bricks without mortar from the volume of wall i.e (1- Volume of bricks without mortar)

=1-0.7695

=0.2305 meter cube.

But this is for wet condition.

For dry volume increase the above volume by 33% as bulkage of sand.

So, the dry volume of mortar is given as

= (0.2305 X 33/100)

= 0.306565 meter cube.

Step5:- Assume grade of mortar and calculate the volume of sand and cement. Now, let us take the ratio of mortar is 1:6 i.e (1 part Cement & 6 Part Sand) total is 7 part.

The cement is one part so its volume is given by,

= {0.306565 X (1/7)}

=0.043795 m3

The density of cement is 1440 kg/m3

So, Quantity of cement will be

= 0.043795X1440

= 63.64 kg approx.

i.e 1.26 bags of cement of 50 kg

Again, sand is six-parts its volume is given by,

={0.306565 X (6/7)}

=0.26277 m3

Hence,  From the above calculation, we found that for one-meter cube volume of the wall we require

500 Numbers of bricks,

63 kg of cement and

0.263 m3 of sand.

If, you require to calculate the number of bricks and volume of mortar of 15-meter cube wall then just multiply the calculated value of bricks, cement, and sand for a one-meter cube of the wall by 15 and we will get all the required quantity.
