The slab is a flat and smooth surface on the ground or over the ground supported by two-member on two or all sides is known as the slab. Slab connect almost all member like a beam, column, stairs, etc to provide a movable environment for the people on it. The slab may be of different shapes like rectangular, square, triangular, etc. but according to design it is categorized into two types, they are one-way slab and two-way slab.
Hey, guys in this article l have described the difference between slabs as many students had asked with me for a month through a comment to make an article on differences between the one-way slab and two-way slab so, l have brought this article today for you.
So let’s start,
it is supported on the column, beam, wall, etc with reinforcement or without reinforcement for safe locomotion from one place to another place.

Now let us move towards the differents between one way slab and two way slab
SN | One way Slab | Two way Slab |
---|---|---|
1) | In one way slab, two beams are only used to support the slab. It means the slab is supported by four two beams. | In two way slab, four beams are used to support the slab. It means the slab is supported by four beams. |
2) | In one way slab, the ratio of length to width of the slab is always equal to or greater than two. | In two way slab, the ratio of length to width of the slab is always less than two. |
3) | The main reinforcement is provided in only one direction is a one-way slab. See in this picture. | The main reinforcement is provided in both directions is a two-way slab. See in this picture. |
4) | There is a distribution rod perpendicular to the main rods. | There is no distribution rod perpendicular to the main rods. |
5) | Main rods have been provided only in one direction of the slab. | The main rods has provided in two directions of the slab. |
6) | Loads are transferred through two directions. | Loads are transferred through all four directions of the slab. |
7) | Bent-up bars are provided in one direction. | Bent up bars are provided in two directions. |
8) | It has a high possibility of generating cracks during earthquakes. | It has a low possibility of generating cracks in earthquakes. |
See on the left side of the picture, this is a one-way slab because there are two-beam only.
In the same way, See on the right side of the picture, this is a two-way slab because it contains a four-beam.

When to use one way and two way slab?
Two way slab is used for a low span of the structure like house water tank, covering of meeting hall, the roof of the building. It is constructed when the length of the slab is approximately equal to the width.
One way slab is used for the large span of the structure like a bridge, culvert, drainage cover, etc. It is constructed when the length of the slab is much greater than the width.
