Numerical Example for Soil Properties Calculation

Soil Properties Calculator | Void Ratio, Porosity

Q) Calculate Degree of Saturation (S), Porosity (n), Saturated Unit Weight (γ_sat), Air Content (a) of soil having following data.
Water Content (w): 15%
Dry Unit Weight (γ_d): 16 kN/m³
Specific Gravity of Soil Solids (G_s): 2.65
Void Ratio (e): 0.75
Bulk Unit Weight (γ_bulk): 18.4 kN/m³

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate Degree of Saturation (S)

The Degree of Saturation (S) can be calculated using the formula:
S = (w * G_s) / e
Given:
Water Content (w) = 15% = 0.15
Specific Gravity (G_s) = 2.65
Void Ratio (e) = 0.75
Substitute the values:
S = (0.15 * 2.65) / 0.75 = 0.53 or 53%

Step 2: Calculate Porosity (n)

Porosity (n) can be calculated using the formula:
n = e / (1 + e)
Given:
Void Ratio (e) = 0.75
Substitute the values:

n = 0.75 / (1 + 0.75) = 0.4286 or 42.86%

Step 3: Calculate Saturated Unit Weight (γ_sat)

The Saturated Unit Weight (γ_sat) can be calculated using the formula:
γ_sat = γ_d * (1 + e) / (1 + w)
Given:
Dry Unit Weight (γ_d) = 16 kN/m³
Void Ratio (e) = 0.75
Water Content (w) = 15% = 0.15
Substitute the values:

γ_sat = 16 * (1 + 0.75) / (1 + 0.15) = 24.348 kN/m³

Step 4: Calculate Air Content (a)

The Air Content (a) can be calculated using the formula:
a = (1 – S) * n
Given:

 Degree of Saturation (S) = 0.53
 Porosity (n) = 0.4286
Substitute the values:

a = (1 – 0.53) * 0.4286 = 0.2016 or 20.16%

Summary:

1. Degree of Saturation (S): 53%
2. Porosity (n): 42.86%
3. Saturated Unit Weight (γ_sat): 24.348 kN/m³
4. Air Content (a): 20.16%

Hence, In this way we can calculate the different proprties of soil using different formulas manually or you can use above calculator to calculate directly.
