Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

What is Partition wall?

The partition wall is also known as the stud wall. Normally buildings have two different types of walls. One of them is a load-bearing wall and another is which does not support load on it.

Most of the exterior walls of the building are load-bearing walls and also in some cases the interior wall of the building are load-bearing. Partition walls are those whose purpose is to divide the area within the building.

It divides the section of the room. They are thin and do not have to support the load of other materials. They have to withstand themselves.

There are different types of partition walls. It may be different from each other in strength, durability, and appearance of the wall. In general, all the partition walls are divided into two groups. Assembled and Frame-Based.

Assembled walls are those which are constructed by the building materials like bricks, AAC blocks, etc. Frame-based partition walls are constructed with the help of materials like plywood, Drywall, etc. Before we move toward different Partition wall types, let us read a few terms below.

Requirement of partition wall

  1. It should be strong enough to carry its own weight.
  2. It should act as a sound barrier when it divides the space.
  3. It should possess enough strength to support some wall fixtures sinks washbasins extra.
  4. It should support suitable decorative surfaces.
  5. It should be light, thin, cheap, fire-resistant, and easy to construct.

Advantages of partition wall

It helps to create privacy in activities. It divides the space of the room for different types of works for easy access.

The partition wall is thin in nature so, it occupies less area within the room. It is lightweight so, it does not provide more extra load on the structure.

They are cheaper to construct as compared to the load-bearing walls. It can be constructed easily in any shape and can be redesign within less time.

Different Partition Wall Types

Depending upon the materials used partition wall are of following types.

1) Brick Partition wall

Plain brick partition of half brick thickness is not more than 2m in height. These types of partition all are generally used in the building as it is strong as well as economical. There are three types of brick partition walls.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

They are a plan brick partition wall, Brick noggin partition wall, Reinforced partition wall. Plan brick partition walls are constructed with the help of binding materials like mortar (A mixture of cement and sand) between the bricks.

These walls have plastered on both sides for a smooth surface. These walls are soundproof and fire-resistant. The brick noggin partition wall is the same as the plain brick partition wall but the portion of the wall is constructed with wood.

It makes the wall light but it is not a fire-resisting wall. The reinforced partition wall is constructed with the help of steel wire mesh within the wall which makes it extra strong than a plain brick partition wall.

They are extremely fire-resisting soundproof. But it makes the partition wall somewhat uneconomical due to the use of steel wire mesh.

2) Clay brick partition

These types of partition walls are constructed with the help of clay, cement, terracotta, or concrete. They can be either compacted or hollow.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

These types of walls are lightweight, economical, and fire-resistant. These types of walls create a warmer environment in winter and a cooler environment in summer seasons. The thickness of this wall varies between 6 cm to 15 cm.

3) Concrete partition wall

These types of walls are constructed with the help of plain concrete cement or reinforced concrete cement. The concrete partition wall can be solid or hollow.

Partition Wall Types | Concrete partition wall

These types of walls are constructed in situ or pre-cast. They are strong, durable, and easy to handle. Its main advantage is that it is faster and economical in construction.

4) Glass Partition wall

These types of walls are constructed within the room. It may be of hollow glass or solid glass. The wooden frame or metal frame is used to hold the glass for partition.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

These types of walls are noise resistance as well as moisture resistance. Glass partition walls are lightweight, and simple in construction. But it is not strong enough to resist large impact. But it is cheaper to construct.

5) Wooden partition/Plywood partition/Timber Partition

These types of walls consist of wooden frameworks and supported on the ceiling and floor. These types of walls are constructed with the help of screws and nails. It is lighter in weight, cheap and environment friendly.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

It can be reshaped easily as required. But they are neither soundproof nor fire-resistant. They are not suitable for damp areas. The wood may decay due to moisture. They are not constructed for the permanent installation of the partition walls.

6) Straw board partition wall

These types of partition walls are constructed with the help of straw of wheat and rice which are compacted with a hydraulic machine with glue or other binding materials.

Partition Wall Types | Straw board partition wall

The strawboard is the economical and recyclable source of the partition wall. It is an extremely noise-resisting material. But it should be prevented from moisture to prevent it from decay.

It is not fire-resisting so, these types of partition walls should be avoided near fir source. It is very easy to install on the required area with the help of screws and nails. The framework of the strawboard is made up of metal or maybe of wood.

7) Dry wall Partition

These walls are also known as plasterboard, Plaster slab, Wallboard, Sheet Rock, Gypsum board partition wall. The framework of this wall can be metal or GI.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

It is attached to the ceiling and floors in which joints are filled with gypsum materials. It can be installed very easily and quickly. It is also soundproof, fireproof, and lightweight in nature.  But should be protected from water and load should be avoided on it.

8) A.C Sheet and GI Sheet partition wall

Asbastos is the silicate material, excavated from esbastos mines. It consists of thin and long fibers which are very strong, durable, and waterproof materials when it is bound with cement.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

The asbestos fiber in the partition wall acts as a reinforcement and increases the tensile strength of the wall. It consists of 80% to 90% of cement and 10% to 20% of asbestos fiber.

These types of AC sheets and GI sheets are fixed with metal or wooden frames to make them attractive in appearance. These types of walls are lightweight, soundproof, economical, and fire-resistant.

9) Wood Wool Partition Wall

It Is made up of shredded wood bounded with ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), water, and a suitable cement setting accelerator. It is made by compressing with a hydraulic machine under low pressure and ambient temperature.

Partition Wall Types | Requirement and Advantages of the partition wall

It can be directly fixed on the wall with the help of a screw and nails. It can be installed with help of glue and other binding materials. They are thermally insulated, durable, and easy to install.

10) Metal Lath partition Wall

These types of partition walls are used where there is a small space. In this wall steel wire mesh and channels are used so it is called a metal lath partition wall.

Partition Wall Types | Metal Lath partition Wall

The frame is first prepared with the help of steel and the wire mesh is mounted on it. After that, a hard coating is covered on it for the final finish. These types of partition walls are thin strong durable and fireproof.
