Overhanging Beam – Types | Advantages, and Disadvantages

The beam which has two different support and extended up to some distance at one of the end or both ends of the beam is known as an overhanging beam.

The end of extended side of beam does not have any support.

Overhanging beam can be divided into two types. They are,

Types of Overhanging Beam

  1. Single overhanging Beam
  2. Double Overhanging Beam

Single overhanging beam

Singly overhanging beam

The beam which has two support but extended only at one side of beam is known as a single overhanging beam.

The support may be of hing support or roller support.

Double Overhanging Beam

Double Overhanging Beam

The beam which has two support but extended at both sides of the beam is known as Double overhanging beam.

Here, also support may be hing or roller.

The load applied on the the hanged portion of beam is transferred at the support of beam with equivalent bending moment.

Advantages

It is provided to balance the axial moment at the support of the column.

It increases the life span of column and as well as reduces one sided load on beam.

Disadvantages

It increases the uniaxial moment at the support of beam.

It increase the dead load on the structure.
