What is Lapping/Splicing joint in steel rod?

The lapping joint in steel rod is provided when there is lack of length of steel rod for required section.

While lapping two steel rod we have to provide sufficient lap to get the required tensile strength. Here are some rules to provide lap length.

What is Lapping/Splicing joint in steel rod?

For Compression

The lap length should be equals to the development length or 24 times the diameter of the steel rod used. whichever is greater.

For Flexural tension

The lap length should be equals to the development length or 30 times the diameter of the steel rod used. whichever is greater.

For Direct tension

The lap length should be equals to two times the development length or 30 times the diameter of the steel rod used. whichever is greater.

For Straight length of lap in hook

The lap length should be equals to 200 mm or 15 times the diameter of the steel rod used. whichever is greater.

Things to know

The lapping should not be preferred for the steel rod having a diameter of more than 36 mm. It will be better to do welding.

If lapping is done between two rods having different diameters then lapping is preferred according to the thinner steel rods.

If the lapping is allowed in the steel rod having a diameter of more than 36 mm then the spiral steel rod should be provided around the lapped portion of the steel rods.
