What are the causes of slope instability?

There are mainly two causes of slope instability and these are:

  1. Increase in shear stress (Tau)
  • Due to rain, increase in the unit weight of soil by wetting.
  • Due to an increase in external load on the slope ( e.g. construction)
  • Due to an increase in steepness of slopes ( such as erosion or excavation)
  • Due to dynamic shock ( such as an earthquake)
  1. Due to the shear strength of soil(S)
  • Due to an increase in water content shear strength decreases
  • Due to pore water pressure
  • Due to weathering
  • Loss of cementing material (erosion)
