Types of support in beam and numbers of reaction

The beam is a structural member which supports the load coming from the slab and transfers it to the column. The beam should be strong enough to prevent it from deflecting from its original position. Different types of support in beam are subjected according to the required design of bearing load and earthquake resistance structure. There are mainly two types of support.

Types of support in beam

  1. Simply support
  2. Fixed support

A) Simply Support

Simply supported beams are just supported by columns to bear the load on them. These types of support are provided where the beam needs to be removed temporarily by sliding or lifting without removing loads on it. Simply support is further divided into two support.

  1. Roller Support:- The Support which can offer only one unknown reaction is known as roller support. It has only tendency to move in horizontal plane. It has rotation about the support point as well as horizontal displacement but it does not have verticle displacement.
  2. Hinged/Pin support:- The Support which can offer two unknown reactions is known as Hinged/Pin support. It does not have a tendency to move in the horizontal or vertical plane. It has rotation about the support point but does not has horizontal displacement and verticle displacement.

B) Fixed Support

The support which can offer three unknown reactions is known as fixed support. Fixed support does not have rotation, horizontal displacement nor vertical displacement.

These types of beams are mostly used in the frame structure. Concrete structures are generally fixed support types in residential as well as commercial buildings.
