Two way slab design | Reinforcement details examples – IS Code 456:2000

Slabs are the most essential structural member which provides the platform to withstand dead load as well as a live load to the structure. Slabs are used as the roofs of the buildings, decks in bridges, top, and bottom of the tanks, staircase, etc.

There are different types of slabs, they can be solid, ribbed, or waffle types slabs. But if we divide the slab according to the load-bearing capacity, It can be divided into two types, ie. one-way slab, and two-way slab.

While designing a slab, we have to consider a strip of 1-meter width, even though it is cast in one piece and not in a strip of unit width. Hence, for the purpose of design, a slab is equivalent to a rectangular beam, with width = 1000 mm or 1 meter.

The moment of resistance and the required area of reinforcement are expressed per unit width of the slab while designing. For basic information about slab types and design, At first, I recommend you to read the article below.

Two way slab design

Q) Design a reinforced concrete slab for a room of clear dimension 4-meter x 5 meters. The slab is supported all around walls of width 300 mm. The slab has to carry a live load of 4 KN per meter square. and floor finishes 1 KN per meter square. Use M20 Concrete and 415 steel. assume corners are held down. Sketch the detail of reinforcement.
