While applying load on concrete we need to consider the different load acting on the different materials present in concrete. So, for that, we have to study the three-phase of the concrete. Let us see the short article below.
Concrete is a multipurpose and heterogeneous material. At microscopic leave generally, we find concrete is divided into three-phase. The places in which concrete is divided, along with their detail is explained below:

- Aggregate phase: aggregate particles of varying shape and size
- Binding medium phase: it is made up of an incoherent mass of hydrated cement paste.
- Transition phase: this phase represents the interfacial region between the coarse aggregate particles and hydrated cement paste.
The role of the phase of concrete is explained below
- Concrete is found to be strong in resting compressive force whereas it is weak in resisting compressive force.
- Concrete show brittle behavior in tension and is tougher in compression.
- There is a considerable amount of decrease in the strength of concrete when there is an increase in the size of coarse aggregate
- Permeability coefficient increase when the cement paste phase changes in hardened concrete.
- When the cement paste and aggregate (coarse + fine) combine in order to form a hardened concrete there can be found changes in the stain relationship. The initial stress-strain for the aggregate cement paste and concrete is shown below:
