Definition of soil

The soil is defined as the un-cemented aggregate of mineral grains and decayed organic matter which is filled with liquid and gas or both between them is known as soil. you will get here Soil Mechanics by bc punmia pdf for free in the last of this article.

Soil mechanics is the branch of science that deals with the study of the physical and chemical properties of soil and it’s behavior if it is subjected to various types of force like shear force and compressive force.

Important and application of soil mechanics and foundations (Soil mechanics by bc punmia pdf)

1) Foundations

The loads from any structure like a building, bridge, or dam have to be ultimately transmitted to the soil through the foundation.

Foundation is required to transmit the load of the structure to soil with safety, efficiently, without excessive settlement of the soil mass.

Because excessive settlement can make structure fail for efficient working. So, various types of foundation like spread foundation, foundation action, well foundation e.t.c are made according to required the condition of soil which is only possible if we have knowledge of soil mechanics.

2) Underground and Earth-retaining Structures

When it is required to make a safe structure having a slope or there is less space to construct a structure then the structure is required to retain deep under the soil.

So, to construct such types of structures like drainage, pipelines, and tunnels we have to know the theory of earth pressure on the retained structure is all provided by soil mechanics using the concept of ‘soil-structure interaction’.

3) Pavement Design

A Pavement is a hard crust made by compaction of soil for the purpose of providing a smooth and strong surface and transmitting the load of traffic and vehicles.

The behavior of pavement may swell, shrink under the various condition of loading environmental effect which causes the failure of the transportation system. Hence, to this kind of problem, we must know of soil mechanics.

4) Earth Dam

Earth dams are a huge structure made of soil as a construction material built for creating water reservoirs.

To construct it we must have knowledge of consolidation, slope stability, effects of seepage, and consequent settlement as well as compaction characteristics of the soil.

Failure of earth dam may cause a widespread catastrophe, it should be designed and constructed carefully with the help of soil mechanics.

5) Excavations, Embankments

For temporary deep excavation, we need to support timbering or bracing. So, excavation requires the knowledge of slope stability analysis, the idea of soil elasticity, isotropic properties.

Hence, to gain knowledge about these properties of soil knowledge of soil mechanics is must require.

Besides this, soil mechanics is required to solve the problem relatthe ed to the soil like soil heave, soil subsidence, frost heave, shrinkage, and swelling.
