What are Road Humps?

Road humps are a roadway geometric design feature intended to physically reduce the speed of vehicles. They have been designed, unlike the traditional ” speed bump “, to achieve a specific result on vehicle operations without imposing an unreasonable or unacceptable safety risk.

Requirements for good Road Hump design

Some negative impacts of road humps

1. The visual impact of the hump and the associated signs and pavement markings.

2. Increased noise in the vicinity of the hump, especially if there are trucks

3. Being perceived as the cause of vehicular damage

4. Increased travel time for buses ( both transit vehicles and school buses )

5. Increased response time of emergency service vehicles ( up to 10 seconds )

The basic requirements of ideal humps

a ) No road humps shall be provided on-road located in nonurban areas.

b ) They can be provided on slow-speed roads ( speed < 30 kmph , only on class IV roads ) in some urban areas if their necessity is justified.

c ) The width of the hump shall not be less than 3.7m. It should have a parabolic shape as shown in the figure with a maximum height of 0.1m at the crown.

d ) The faces of the humps shall be painted with 200 mm wide alternating black and white stripes at 45 deg slopes.
