Difference between Analysis and Design of building?

There is a huge difference between analysis and design. I am showing you with example. Consider you have a building whose age is 30 years.

Difference between analysis and design

Since there was less steel rod used at the time of construction in the building, you are worried about the strength of building to withstand an earthquake. Now, you want to check whether the building will further hold a load or not?.

So, you hired a civil engineer and asked him to check whether the building has sufficient strength or not to face an earthquake load.

Yes, exactly this portion is known as analysis. Now, the engineer will analyze the building and tell you about the strength of your building.

Now let us talk about the design. Let us consider you have to construct a building for the school. And now you again hired an engineer to assist in the construction of the school.

Now, the engineer will test the soil, and they will provide you a complete plan and design for your school according to the capacity of students, earthquake criteria, and furniture loading of the school. so, this is known as the design of the building.

Further let us see more in short that what are they,

Difference between analysis and design

What is Analysis?

The analysis is a situation existing in an already-constructed building, wherę the geometry of the beam and the reinforcement details are known.

The engineers are required to calculate the capacity to check whether the existing beam is capable of resisting the external loads or not.

In this section the quantity of materials like steel rod, and volume of concrete must known initially to calculate shear force, bending moment and load bearing capacity of building.

What is Design?

Design situations occur in a new building. Here you need not have to get detail of depth, breadth, and reinforcement details for the beam, column, slab, etc. You have to provide the data yourself according to the safe and economical structure.

It is important to know the behavior of each type of beam before designing them in order to correctly place the reinforcement.

When subjected to an increasing external moment, the beam cracks after a certain load, and then the reinforcement comes into play.

The cracks keep increasing in size, eventually leading to the failure of the beam and the corresponding moment is termed the ‘ultimate moment.

This moment is resisted by the internal resisting moment created by a couple of compressive force in concrete and the tensile force in steel.

Conclusion

For a civil engineer, both analysis and design are the backbone of their working field if they are working in the constructional area.

They must have knowledge of analysis and design to create a unique types of structure. With it they can not make a safe, economical and long lasting structure.

So, these are the difference between analysis and design of the building or structure.
